Fonte Plateau on Nimitz Hill Part II
|
(Right) Immediately west of the high school
is this foundation. In 1945 this Quonset Hut
was the site of the War Crimes Trials on
Guam. 144 Japanese and others were tried,
and many were found guilty and hanged near
here. August 2004.
Turn off Spruance Drive (Rt. 6) between the modern high school and fire
station and drive down Murray Road. You will come to Geiger Field, a
recreational ball field the SeaBees cleared in 1945. In the far background
still stands a goal post.
The ruins of Bldg. 191, a Quonset hut built in 1945.
This building is across the street from Geiger
Field. In the lower photo you can see that the back
third has been torn away by typhoon winds.
This damage has occured sometime after 1998. The photographer has seen a
photo of this same structure that local historical expert Dave Lotz shot that
year, and the entire building was standing. Like Bldg. 1686 on Naval Base
Guam, this one's days are numbered. One, maybe two more typhoons will be
all that is needed to complete its destruction. August 2004.
Although there is no definitive proof, it is
believed that this cave complex was General
Takashina's HQ during the July 1944
American invasion. Takashina was killed
when he stepped outside on 28 July. Next to
the caves is a quarry the SeaBees later used
to excavate building material. August 2004.
Takashina's command post here is located on the northeaster side of Nimitz Hill. You'll see it on the left after
you've crested the hill and are going back down Spruance Road (Route 6) towards Angiua, which is right outside
Hagatna.
