A joint U.S., Palauan, and Japanese Color Guard opens the
ceremonies on 15 Sept. 2004 at the Palau National Track & Field
on the island of Koror. U.S. Navy photo; PH2 N. T. Miller.
The ceremonies opened with a parade of the Colors and a march around the stadium by Palauan
public school children at the Palau National Track & Field on the capital island of Koror. Symbolic of
Palau's long history with both Japan and the United States, and symbolic of the healing and hard-won
friendship between Japan and the United States, the color guard was made up of U.S. Sailors, Palauan
police, and a representative from the Japanese embassy.
